Mgff – The Magna Graecia Film Festival is an ambitious project, conceived and realized by the brothers Alessandro and Gianvito Casadonte. A festival dedicated to the cinema, which puts the first works in competition. An authentic bet in a territory, peripheral and therefore marginal, which can now be said to have been won. And how. And the reasons for this peremptory affirmation are evidenced by the data of the kermesse founded in 2004 and passed by the well-known Ionic towns of Soverato and Montepaone to Catanzaro, the place where it arrived five years ago. The capital city of the region has in fact strongly wanted to link its name to that of a review that has received over time the imprimatur of masters of the seventh art of the caliber of Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola, Citto Maselli, Ugo Gregoretti and Giorgio Arlorio, only to name a few. Sacred monsters of the big screen who have defined Gianvito Casadonte as an intellectual deserving to be followed and supported. The same sequel that he received from the public, immediately approaching the MGFF and therefore able to make it record record numbers in terms of participation. Not to mention the affection of the people towards a review that despite its level and even elitist value productions allows free access to thousands of spectators. A feature that has always characterized the Magna Graecia, which has become the event of the people. An event that can therefore be enjoyed by everyone, young and old, women and men, expert cinephiles and simple fans of Movies. And it is precisely this one of the winning ideas that has united and continues to unite the past, present and ideally future of the Festival. A fixed summer appointment that represents the great opportunity of a reality light years away from the media spotlight and the star system as the central band of Calabria. A geographical area and, more in general, a region that is also economically depressed, which thanks to the MGFF has seen a surge in terms of the influx generated by the event. The merit of all this goes also and above all ascribed to the skill of the patron Casadonte and the organizers who quickly changed the skin of the MGFF, without distorting a consolidated and successful format focused on the promotion of the first and second works of young talents of the so-called seventh art. The reference is to the increasing involvement of top-ranking stars of the international film firmament. This is just to mention a few of Matt Dillon, Matthew Modine, Mira and Paul Sorvino, Nastassja Kinski, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, to get - in this 2018 - to Oliver Stone, Richard Dreyfuss and Terry Gilliam. Big that count in their "personal tag" awards such as Oscar and Golden Globe, just to like. History of our days, therefore, which is linked to that of many years now passed and throws a sort of bridge with a future of sure in the name of many surprises. But it is useless to anticipate the times if the present is already so full of hits and "sensational" that make the Magna Graecia a real glam event in the Italian cinema scene. Even far too obvious, then, that hotels, restaurants, bathing establishments of the entire Ionian coast and the historical center of Catanzaro, but also accommodation and restaurant facilities have been, and still are, literally besieged every morning, afternoon and evening, for well over ten days (even though the Mgff is only nine) between the end of July and the beginning of August. Therefore, the recorded figures are a natural consequence that the trade associations highlight for their significance. Always in the same period of time on the seafront of the maritime district of the capital, but also in the central core of Catanzaro, the stars and the artists guests of the kermesse go for a walk, which are integrated into the city's fabric. An important fact, not to be neglected, also and above all regarding the sociological aspect, since it is really difficult that Calabria becomes - even sporadically - the fulcrum of the country or even of the continent. This is why local institutions and a large group of private sponsors immediately believed in the project, deciding to support it. A support that, although laudable, however, is certainly not in line with the actual potential of the kermesse. The characteristic traits of an event that also in 2017 (the last in order of time before the one in progress), from 29 July to 5 August, has given so much to Catanzaro as to Calabria as a whole, a 14th edition dedicated to 'unforgettable Marcello Mastroianni. The Mgff has in fact considerable potential and is always showing great growth, attracting each year - as stated - masses of spectators. In the wake of tradition, one would say, considering that the ambitious project of the Casadonte brothers boasts considerable numbers for the reality in which it finds full and complete implementation: over 3 thousand daily presences with points, even twice, in the inaugural and final evening.
